What support workers can claim
Most of it is mileage. The rest adds up.
Mileage in your own carBetween clients, sites or bases, not the normal commute. 55p a mile from April 2026 (45p before) less anything your employer pays.6,000 miles a year: about £1,680 over 4 years
Washing your uniformHMRC flat rate of £125 a year for domiciliary care workers and healthcare assistants who launder their own uniform, £60 for other roles. No receipts.About £100 over 4 years at £125
Registration feesFees you paid yourself for registrations HMRC recognises. DBS itself is not claimable, professional bodies are.Ask your specialist
Phone for workExtra charges you pay for work calls. Line rental, the handset and calls inside your bundle do not count.Itemised work calls only
Sam, agency support worker, 5,200 miles a year
Paid 20p a mile by the agency. HMRC allowed 45p in those years, so 25p a mile is claimable: £1,300 a year of relief, £260 tax back per year, for 4 years.

Figures are illustrative at the basic rate. Your real figure comes from your HMRC record, and you approve it before anything is filed.

How much does it cost?
37.5% plus VAT of the refund, minimum £45 plus VAT. No refund, no fee. Nothing upfront. Full fee page.
Does agency work count?
Yes, for travel between clients during the working day. The trip from home to a single fixed workplace is a commute, and so is the trip from home to each agency placement if you work under supervision, direction or control.
My employer pays me mileage already.
If they pay less than HMRC's approved rate (55p a mile from April 2026, 45p before) you can claim tax on the difference. Most care agencies pay 20p to 30p.
I do not keep a mileage log.
HMRC expects a record of each work journey. If you did not keep one, your specialist rebuilds it from rotas, visit records and client lists, and it must match journeys you actually made. Start a log from today.
