In short
- Your P60 is the year-end summary of pay and tax from each employer you were with on 5 April.
- Employers must issue it by 31 May.
- It shows total pay, tax, NI, student loan and your final code.
- We do not need it: the same figures come from your HMRC record.
Where to find it
- Payroll portal or the email your employer sent in May
- Your personal tax account under PAYE income history, which shows the same figures for the last 5 tax years
- Ask your employer for a duplicate
What we read from it
Gross pay confirms which tax band your relief is worth. Tax paid is the ceiling on any refund. The code tells us whether expenses were already being allowed. Two P60s for one year means two jobs, and a BR check.
What it does not show
Anything you spent. Mileage, uniform, fees and tools never appear on a P60, which is why HMRC cannot refund them without a claim.
Questions
I left before 5 April.
Then you get a P45 for that job, not a P60. What is a P45.
The figures look wrong.
Compare with your March payslip's year-to-date column. Raise it with payroll if they differ.
This guide is general information, not advice about your circumstances. Figures use HMRC rates for the 2026 to 2027 tax year. We are a paid tax agent and not HMRC.
