In short
- HMRC refunds tax it already knows it took wrongly, usually by a P800 letter after the tax year ends.
- It never refunds work expenses on its own because it does not know you had them.
- Tax code errors are sometimes corrected automatically, often years late.
- If in doubt, check. It is free and takes 60 seconds.
What HMRC does by itself
After 5 April HMRC reconciles what each employer reported against what you should have paid. Where the two do not match it sends a P800 or a Simple Assessment letter. These letters are sent between June and March after the tax year ends.
What it waits for you to claim
- Mileage, uniform, tools, professional fees: every employment expense.
- Marriage Allowance transfers.
- Higher rate relief on some pension contributions.
- Tax on a PPI or pension lump sum taxed at emergency rates.
None of these appear in your PAYE record, so the reconciliation cannot find them. What can you claim tax back on has the full list.
Why a P800 is not the whole story
A P800 saying you overpaid £80 only covers what HMRC knew. If you also drove 4,000 work miles that year, the expenses claim sits on top.
Worked example
A retail worker gets a P800 refund of £64 for an incorrect code. She also washes a branded uniform. The £60 flat rate over 4 years is a further £48 back, which HMRC would never have sent.
Questions
I got a text saying HMRC owes me a refund.
HMRC does not text or email refund links. Read tax refund scams before you click anything.
How far back does an automatic refund go?
HMRC usually only reconciles the year just ended. Older years need a claim. How far back you can claim.
