Tax Rebates for Warehouse and Factory Workers

Warehouse operatives, factory workers and production staff often buy and maintain their own protective clothing and footwear, and many are owed tax relief they have never claimed. If you work in a warehouse or factory, it is worth checking whether HMRC owes you, because a claim can usually cover several years at once. This guide explains what you can claim.

Why warehouse and factory workers can be owed a rebate

These roles often require protective clothing and safety footwear that you maintain yourself, and HMRC lets you claim tax relief on the upkeep. It does not refund it automatically, so unless you claim, the money stays with HMRC. As you can backdate a claim by four tax years, the amounts add up.

What warehouse and factory workers can claim

Uniform and protective clothing

If you wear a recognisable uniform or protective clothing, such as branded workwear, hi-vis, or safety boots, and you wash, repair or replace it yourself, you can claim the uniform maintenance allowance. Protective clothing and safety footwear are exactly the kind of items that qualify. See our uniform tax rebate guide.

Tools and equipment

If you buy your own tools or equipment that your employer does not provide or reimburse, you may be able to claim tax relief on them. See our tools tax rebate guide.

Other costs

Depending on your role, other necessary costs may qualify, such as travel to a temporary workplace in your own vehicle where you are not fully reimbursed. See our mileage relief guide.

How much could a warehouse worker claim?

You receive tax relief at your tax rate, usually 20 percent. The standard uniform allowance is £60 a year, and combined with safety footwear and any tools across the current year plus four previous years, it is often a worthwhile claim.

How far back can I claim?

The current tax year plus the previous four. The oldest year drops off each 5 April, so claiming sooner protects an extra year.

How to claim your warehouse tax rebate

You can claim directly from HMRC, or let TaxPro handle it. We check your uniform, footwear and any tools, claim every eligible year, and deal with HMRC for you. We work on a no win, no fee basis, so a percentage fee only applies once your refund is secured.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim for safety boots?

Where you buy and maintain your own safety footwear for work and are not reimbursed, it generally qualifies as protective clothing.

My employer provides and washes my workwear. Can I claim?

If your employer provides and launders it free of charge, there is nothing to claim. If you maintain it yourself, you can.

Do I need receipts?

For flat rate uniform claims, often not. For actual costs and tools, keep your receipts.

How long does it take?

Once submitted, refunds usually come through in around 10 days, with the whole process often taking 8 to 10 weeks.
