Tax Rebates for Retail Workers: What You Can Claim

If you work in retail, you might assume there is nothing to claim, but many shop and store workers are owed tax relief on the cost of maintaining a uniform and other work essentials. If you wear a branded uniform you wash yourself, it is worth checking whether HMRC owes you, because a claim can usually cover several years at once. This guide explains what retail workers can claim.

Why retail workers can be owed a rebate

Retail roles often involve a uniform you have to maintain at your own expense, and HMRC lets you claim tax relief on the upkeep. It does not refund it automatically, so unless you claim, the money stays with HMRC. As you can backdate a claim by four tax years, even a modest yearly amount adds up.

What retail workers can claim

Uniform and laundry

If you wear a recognisable, branded uniform and you wash, repair or replace it yourself rather than your employer doing it, you can claim the uniform maintenance allowance. Everyday clothes, even if your employer asks for a particular colour, do not qualify, but a genuine branded uniform does. See our uniform tax rebate guide.

Other costs

Depending on your role, other necessary costs may also qualify, such as travel to a temporary workplace (not your normal commute) in your own vehicle, where you are not fully reimbursed. See our mileage relief guide.

How much could a retail worker claim?

You receive tax relief at your tax rate, so 20 percent for a basic rate taxpayer. The standard uniform allowance is £60 a year, and claimed across the current year plus four previous years it adds up, especially if combined with any other eligible costs.

How far back can I claim?

The current tax year plus the previous four. The oldest year drops off each 5 April, so claiming sooner protects an extra year. Once claimed, your tax code is usually adjusted so you keep getting the relief.

How to claim your retail tax rebate

You can claim directly from HMRC, or let TaxPro handle it. We confirm whether you qualify, claim every eligible year, and deal with HMRC for you. We work on a no win, no fee basis, so a percentage fee only applies once your refund is secured.

Frequently asked questions

My employer just asks me to wear black. Can I claim?

Usually not. Everyday clothes do not qualify, even in a set colour. You need a genuine recognisable or branded uniform that you maintain yourself.

My employer washes my uniform. Can I still claim?

No. If your employer launders it free of charge, there is nothing to claim.

Is it worth claiming for a uniform?

On its own it is modest, but across five years, and combined with any other eligible costs, it is usually worth checking.

How long does it take?

Once submitted, refunds usually come through in around 10 days, with the whole process often taking 8 to 10 weeks.
